BCAP provides a comprehensive array of services designed to meet the needs of the low-income population across Berks County. Program services include budget counseling, weatherization and housing assistance, case management, youth mentoring and family development.  BCAP's CREST (Community, Resources, Education, Services and Technology) Program at the Reading Public Library Branches provides assistnace with applying for government benefits.

Boyertown Area Multi-Service, Inc. encourages the coordination of social services for people of all ages in the greater Boyertown area. Multi-Service offers five core programs: Meals on Wheels, an Emergency Food Pantry, The Center at Spring Street, Energy Case Management, and Volunteer Transportation to Medical Appointments.

Centro Hispano Daniel Torres provides bilingual and bicultural social service programs to encourage self-sufficiency for the Latino community. Among many programs, the agency operates a Senior Center, and provides transportation and tax preparation services, along with information and referral to community services.

Salvation Army is an international organization dedicated to helping those in need of crisis intervention. In Reading, the organization provides assistance in meeting basic needs through energy or rent assistance, prescription help, food and clothing distribution and disaster services. The Supportive Housing Program helps homeless and disabled families find permanent solutions to their homelessness.

United Community Services builds partnerships to help assess community needs and develop strategies to meet those needs. UCS connects families to needed resources, helps workers improve the workplace, and prepares youth for apprenticeships in the building trades.

Berks County faces many challenges each day that impact the present and future quality of life for many of its residents. Did you know…………..

  • Between 2009 and 2010, there was a 19% increase in the number of Berks County residents who received Food Stamps.
  • Over 50% of the Food Stamp Recipients in Berks County are below the age of 18.
  • Over 14% of Berks County families with children under the age of 18 were living below the poverty level in 2008.
  • The City of Reading is ranked as one of the nation’s poorest cities, having the highest poverty rate in Pennsylvania and the sixth highest in the country. (among cities with a population above 60,000)
  • In 2008, almost 17% of the Berks County adult population did not possess a high school diploma.
  • The Reading School District estimates that 70% of children entering kindergarten lack one or more skills needed to be successful in school.
  • The City of Reading has one of the highest rates of births to teen mothers in the state of Pennsylvania.
