2022 United Way Holiday Guide

Do you want to give back this holiday season, but don’t know how? United Way’s Holiday Volunteer Guide has more than 60 opportunities at 40 different agencies throughout Berks County.

Darby Wiekrykas, United Way’s Volunteer Engagement Program Manager, manages this process and enjoys providing this community resource because, “it connects local agencies with people they may not normally have access to and also allows them to find the help they need during this busy time of year.”

There are a variety of ways to serve this year. There are opportunities to prepare a meal, wrap presents, distribute gifts, or even serve as a bell ringer. If you aren’t sure what you can do check it out because Darby believes, ”There is something for everyone in this year’s guide!” She continues, ”Even if someone cannot volunteer in person, they can adopt a family or host a collection.” This is a great opportunity because many agencies have a need for gift cards or adopting a family within the agency to ensure they have a merry holiday season during a difficult time of their life.

Want to get started in spreading holiday cheer with United Way’s Holiday Volunteer Guide? Here are a few tips:

  • The first thing you need to do is contact the agency directly before you begin a collection drive or volunteer project on their behalf – the agency’s needs may have changed.
  • When contacting the agency, remember to be patient. The agencies are often overwhelmed during the holidays season and may not respond immediately.
  • Get a group together! The saying of,” the more the merrier” rings true when it comes to helping during the holidays. You can donate/volunteer as an individual or bring together friends, family, neighbors, colleagues, or church group members.
  • Remember that volunteering is something that can be done all year long! As much as we love to volunteer during the holidays, agencies have needs all of the time. Be sure to visit United Way’s Volunteer site to find opportunities that match your interests and availability, and check out United Way’s Wish List page.
