Growth doesn’t always announce itself loudly. For Zahavah Oliveras, growth began quietly in the sixth grade at the Olivet Boys & Girls Club in Berks County. Her journey was made possible through the strategic investment and partnership of the United Way of Berks County (UWBC)
When Zahavah first joined the Club’s Center for the Arts, Olivet’s specialized hub for music, dance, and digital arts, she was reserved and hesitant. The sixth grader was simply content to observe from the sidelines rather than step into the spotlight.
But growth doesn’t require sudden leaps; it thrives on small, courageous steps. And over time, Zahavah took them one at a time. Through Club classes, Summer Theater Camp, and volunteering opportunities funded by UWBC’s community support, she gradually discovered her voice.
She challenged herself to perform on stage, accepted responsibilities that stretched her comfort zone, and learned the value of teamwork and leadership. Each experience built on the last, strengthening her confidence, resilience, and belief in her own abilities.
United for Transformation
Zahavah’s transformation wasn’t instant, but it was powerful. The quiet sixth grader steadily grew into a confident young woman willing to try new things, embrace challenges, and pursue her passions with pride.
Her journey became a living reminder of what support and encouragement from a united community can achieve for our youth.
“What the Club does differently is create consistency and relationships,” said Brianna Williams, Site Coordinator at the Center for the Arts. “It’s not just programs: it’s staff and mentors who actually notice you, check in on you, and keep encouraging you even when you’re not the most vocal in the room.”
A Bold New Horizon
As Zahavah continued to grow in her confidence and get older, she started becoming more involved beyond just attending programs. She volunteered, helped facilitate activities, and became more active within the Club community.
These were her first steps to building independence as she approached the end of her high school years. The Club supported her with homework help and conversations about future goals during one of the most important stages in her life.
The result? Zahavah is a college student at Cedar Crest College, pursuing a degree in forensic science.
Her continued success is a full-circle moment, showing proof that when donors make these opportunities possible, they don’t just fund programs, they ignite lifelong potential.
What This Means for Our Youth
Zahavah’s journey is just one example of how a united community can empower youth.
But it took more than one person to make this dream a reality. Zahavah needed mentors in her life, fellow students, and a stage to practice her skills, all made possible by donors like you who dream about a greater future for Berks.
Through United Way, your support gives organizations like the Olivet Boys & Girls Club the power to change the lives of youth across our region.
Because Zahavah’s story is not just about personal growth; it’s about what’s possible when young people are given the space, tools, and belief to become their best selves.
United Way of Berks County brings people together to build a stronger Berks for all. Our vision is to empower youth, strengthen health, build stability, and support families in times of crisis to help them get through today and thrive tomorrow. But we can’t do it alone.
